Through the renovation of the Art Nouveau City Hall designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, and the creation of an interactive exhibition, Kecskemét has gained an iconic tourist attraction that alone is worth visiting the Great Plain city for.
The uniqueness of the visitor centre lies in its diversity. It is not just an exhibition, but a complex experience that uses modern visual elements enriched with lights, sounds, and scents, guiding visitors through 9 rooms to better understand the past and present of Kecskemét. The modern library is not only a place for reading but also an excellent venue for relaxation. With its spacious areas and diverse programmes, it offers opportunities for all age groups. A quieter, refreshing experience in the heart of the city centre.
True to its motto “Katona József Library – for a lifetime,” the institution offers more than traditional library services. It provides free activities and programmes for all ages in baby-friendly and fully accessible spaces. The elderly can expand their knowledge through courses such as internet use, Excel spreadsheet training, and smartphone usage.
The library’s Creative Studio is a hub for developing digital skills: children can learn LEGO robot programming, and visitors can also explore multimedia content creation and VR experiences. Certain spaces of the library can be rented for events and conferences for groups of 25–80 people.
Language learning materials are available, along with services such as e-administration, printing, photocopying, and scanning.
In Kecskemét, this is currently the only place where CDs and DVDs can be borrowed, and where a wide range of bookbinding services is available.

The magical performances of the puppet theatre captivate not only young children but also adults. Creative sets, lovable characters, and engaging stories offer a special experience for the whole family. A truly heartwarming programme near the city centre, where imagination comes to life.
With our selection of performances and programmes, we aim to please all age groups, from the youngest to adults. On weekdays, we offer performances for kindergarten groups, primary school students, and visiting groups to the city. On weekends, families are invited to the theatre through our “Sunday Fairytale Ticket” programme. For the youngest children under 4 years old, we regularly organise playful, age-appropriate introductory theatre performances.
We also strive to attract adult audiences with our programme series “Pestians in the Buda Street”, featuring guest artists, theatre companies, and dance theatres from Budapest and other cities. We also perform outside our home venue, and in recent years we have received numerous international festival invitations and successful guest performances.
Since 1992, every two years we have organised the Meeting of Hungarian Puppet Theatres, which serves as a prestigious professional forum and competition in the life of Hungary’s professional puppet theatres.
